Softball Rules

During our Kiwi Sport, we had Softball, we learnt the rules of the game.. So there were two teams, one team was fielding and the other was hitting the 3 softball's with the bat. My group was the fielding team at first, then we swapped over. To remember how to hit the ball, we made up a chant...

"Use door knocking knuckles, put the bat by your ear, eyes on the ball, stomp on the bug, squish the bug, then swat the fly." 

The rules with the bat were:

  • Check your surroundings before swinging the bat.
  • Don't throw the bat.
  • Don't run with the bat.
  • Don't use the bat until the coach tells us too.
  • And definitely do not hit anyone with it!
Our team won in the end with 49 points, and the other team got 31. I felt very excited to hit the ball, that's probably why I missed it twice. But I still got the chance to run around the bases two times, and I was kind of proud of that. I had a lot of fun, and I hope my class had fun as well.

Our first Kiwi Can lesson of the term

Today we had our first Kiwi Can lesson of the term, after our School holiday. We were talking about the four School values. Our energiser included the four values. After that, we got into four groups and all groups got a card each, then we had to make up a skit on that topic. 

"Kiwi can says, I show respect, you should too. Respecting our School, is what we do!"

Financial Literacy

Today Mr. Mike Morgan and Mr. Matthew Hawley from Price Waterhouse and Coopers - an accounting firm, came to teach us about financial literacy. They taught some ways to earn and save money.

I think I've learnt more about money, earning and saving. It was great for us, because we were learning more, and thinking hard, meanwhile we also had fun.

Glenbrae School's Cultural / Music Festival

During the night of Thursday 25th of August 2016, Glenbrae School presented their performances based on music and culture to everyone who came, including parents, family members of ours or maybe friends of staff. Everyone and anyone was invited to come and watch.

All classes took part in these performances. We had a lot of rehearsals as each class, and groups such as the Kapa-Haka group, the Samoan group, the Tongan group and the Cook Island group. Then we had two rehearsals with the whole School, so we knew what to do and say. The Kapa-Haka group kicked off the festival with their amazing performance. Then the Juniors performed their cute and funny dances. 

Finally, it was now our class' turn to perform. Our class was going to play the drums, tambourine's and shakers. The drums we used looked kinda like a Djembe.

The drummers were sitting in a half a circle, while the shakers and tambourine players were standing at the back of them also in a half a circle. Mr. Nath (Our Teacher) was also playing a drum. I was playing the tambourine. One of our class members was playing the bass, and every time he hits it, we had to hit our tambourines to make a good rhythm. The students playing the shakers just hit them continuously against their own hand. The beat was magnificent to my ears. 

As we got into it and started to have fun, our teacher started to dance.. causing other teachers / parents to dance as well. One of the staff members came up on stage and starting dancing with Mr. Nath, and everyone started to laugh their heads off. 

After all, we had the last group to perform, which was also the biggest.. The Cook Island group! First, the smaller children performed their Cook Island dance. A lot of people were cheering them on. Then the older classes came on stage and showed us their fantastic dance. There were also Cook Island drummers which made the dance more exciting!

We had this festival so we could raise some money for our own outfits, the ones we were using weren't ours. There were a lot of parents giving their money for us, so that's great! We're very thankful. That night is definitely a night to remember, it was super fun to experience watching different dances from different cultures and some of us weren't even apart of that culture, so I'm super proud that we gave the dances a try and entertained others.

What does fair play mean to me?
WALT: Interpret the meaning of fair play
It is fair to expect me to:

  • Learn the rules of the game and follow them.
  • Be polite and respectful to who I’m playing with or against.
  • Work together as a team.
  • Be a good winner and a good loser.
  • Share the equipment, and make sure everyone gets a turn.
  • Play and try the best for the team.
  • Obey the coach, and follow their instructions.

Tokyo 2020 Logo Design

For the Winter Learning Journey, one of our weekly activities said that we had to use a website called 'Designmantic' to make a logo for the next Summer Olympic Games, Tokyo 2020. 
-
My design is simple, it is a small Rabbit, but the Rabbit's shadow shows more.. that it is big, tough and not just some little Rabbit you can mess around with. There is strength in that little Rabbit, which also means there is strength in the athletes.

The 3 Most Popular Places in NZ to visit!

Sky Tower:

Of course the most POPULAR place in New Zealand will have to be the Sky Tower! It is placed in the corner of Victoria and Federal Streets, Auckland City, New Zealand. I think it is really popular, because it is the highest tower in New Zealand, but not only is it the highest tower in New Zealand.. it is the highest man-made tower in the Southern Hemisphere! It is 328 metres, (1,076 ft tall).















One Tree Hill:

One Tree Hill is placed in the North Island, New Zealand. It is 182 metres (597 ft tall). One Tree Hill is a memorial place for both Maori and New Zealanders. I think it's famous, because it has a really nice view to look at up there and because it's a memorial place.














Harbour Bridge:

The Harbour Bridge has 8 lanes for cars to drive on. It is 1,020 metres (3,348 ft tall) and is 43.27 metres above water. I think the Harbour Bridge is famous, because it is the longest road bridge in New Zealand and the view up there is amazing!

Tom and Vinicius Video Episode #3

During the last episode of Tom and Vinicius' Videos.. Tom and Vinicius were, I guess, looking for a nice place to take some photos. Then they came across 3 little creatures, one purple, one yellow and one green.
The 3 creatures had a camera, so instantly Tom and Vinicius pose for the photo, but the purple one signaled them to move back a bit, because they were to close to the camera! They moved back and posed again. But she still denied, she signaled them again, and again, then reached the point of them falling off the cliff! But luckily Tom, the Monkey, was flexible enough to make a parachute of himself, while Vinicius sat on him like a boss!

They landed to see the 3 cheeky creatures rowing their boat across the river, so Vinicius reached into his "hair" and pulled out two little boats to chase after them. Once they got to shore, two of the creatures went windsurfing, the yellow one stayed back to offer Tom and Vinicius a parachute.

Tom, Vinicius and the 3 creatures all "windsurfed" to a higher place with nice views! But they didn't even take a photo, and neither were they cheeky... they were just trying to get them to a better view. After all of that they danced all day and night.

Tom and Vinicius Video Episode #2

During the Tom and Vinicius Video Episode #2, the two besties were looking for a place to stay. Tom the Monkey thought he could sleep inside a piece of log, but surprise, surprise, there were Centipedes in there crawling all over his head, GROSS! So he ran away screaming his head off. While he was doing that, the plant, Vinicius, thought he could sleep in a hole of a tree, but surprise, surprise, there was one BIG angry Owl in there picking on his to get out!

Later on, they found a place to stay.. away from the Centipedes and the angry Owl. They both ran into each other again.. like they did in the first episode! When they did bump into each other they also bumped into a little bird-house. Tom thought of staying in a tree-house now, but Vinicius didn't want too. Vinicius wanted to live on the the pond, but Tom didn't want too.

Tom looked to the side and saw... a tree with a pond in front of it, perfect! Now Tom can sleep up in the tree-house while Vinicius sleeps on the lake. They quickly built their places.. when they were done, it was about dark time, so they decided they would sleep now. So they did.. but they couldn't! Because they felt lonely, Tom and Vinicius got out of bed and got outside.. Tom went to hang on the branch to sleep, while Vinicius slept on the pod under him.

Tom and Vinicius Video Episode #1

During Episode #1 of Tom and Vinicius, a yellow Monkey was just minding himself until he saw a yellow glowing ball floating around, so obviously he tries to chase after it. While he was doing that, some other kind of creature that looked like a plant was also intrigued by the glowing ball, I mean who wouldn't be?

They both had to go through a lot of chaos to get them, like getting stuck in a tree, grabbing a Snake by accident... but eventually they had to meet up so the glowing balls both came together and without hesitation they both run up, jump and try to catch it on top of a hill, but they high-fived the glowing ball into disappearance, so the glowing ball was gone now. But they didn't seem to care about it anymore.

They introduced themselves to each other by a pretty weird and awesome handshake, and to end it off.. they both jumped off the cliff.

No Girls Allowed?

During the ancient Olympics, men were allowed to play, but girls weren't... We weren't even allowed to WATCH! 


I think that "rule" was absolutely ridiculous and unfair to girls, they have something in common with boys... they are HUMAN. Some may not have been as "strong" as men, but they should at least gave them a chance to show them what they could do. They were treating girls like second-class people, that's not what they were. Girls can do anything boys can do!

Milo of Croton - 3 Interesting Facts

Here are 3 Interesting facts about Milo of Croton:
  • He won seven crowns (Instead of Gold Medals, the winner had a palm leaf places in their hands and a crown placed on their head to show who the winner was).
  • He saved a philosopher's life when a roof was about to collapse on him.. Milo then married the philosopher's daughter, Myia.
  • The date of Milo's date is unknown. It was reported that Milo was attempting to tear apart a tree when his hands got stuck in a crack of the trunk, and there was a pack of wolves that ate him.

Ancient Horse Riding - Why?

For our Winter Learning Journey / Holiday Programme, the website says "Imagine that you were alive 2792 years ago and invited to compete in the first ever ancient Olympic Games. Which of these events: running, wrestling, boxing, pankration, horse racing and pentathlon would you compete in?"

I chose horse racing, because it looks a lot more safer than the other types of sports, and I think having Horses involved with your job is awesome and I've never rode a Horse before, so it would be a good experience, and could be a good life lesson for me.

Science / Sound for Clubs

Use a Balloon to Amplify Sound

Small sounds can still make a loud noise when you use a good sound conductor. Experiment with a balloon, compressed air and your own ears to find out how it works and the science behind it.


What you'll need:
  • Balloon(s)
Instructions:
  1. Blow up the balloon.
  2. Hold the balloon close to you ear while you or someone else tap lightly on the other side.
What's happening?

Despite you only tapping lightly on the balloon your ears can hear the noise loudly. When you blew up the balloon you forced the air molecules inside the balloon closer to each other. Because the air molecules inside the balloon are closer together, they become a better conductor of sound waves than the ordinary air around you.

King Street Bridge

This article is about a girl named Hera getting bullied by two girls named Lyza and Rebecca.


  • Lyza and Rebecca bullied Hera just because she was Maori.
  • Hera has a friend named Jules.


On King Street Bridge, Hera had lost her lunch to an Eel, so she was feeling pretty dizzy on her way to School today. Hera walked to School with Jules, and when they got there, Jules gave her a greenstone taonga to keep for a while.


After School was finished, Hera was going home now, again crossing the King Street Bridge. As she was walking, she could see Lyza and Rebecca, the two bullies, waiting for her at the bridge. Hera was about to approach them, but Hera was feeling a bit dizzy again. Lyza and Rebecca were calling her names and mocking her. When Hera got closer. She fainted…


When Hera fainted.. Lyza and Rebecca were very worried, they thought she had died.

After that happened, Hera told Jules everything. Lyza and Rebecca walked past them, Lyza said “Hi, Hera” and Hera smiled. Lyza and Rebecca were so scared, they didn’t want to bully her again.

Keep your Cat inside

WALT: Summarise stories for our Reciprocal Reading.


This article is about pet cats escaping from the house, and eating other animals and invertebrates like Mice, Birds, Insects and Geckos. Scientists put Kittycam’s on some Cats to see where they go at night while their owners are sleeping. The Scientists also found out that they eat NZ native birds and insects, like Weta’s.


Scientists have to cut open stray Cats just to find out what they ate, or they either wait for the Cat droppings and they look very carefully for pieces of animals like Mice, but it is kind of difficult, because their is also Cat food in the droppings. It is kind of hard to find the Cat droppings, because they tend to hide it.

  • Study 1 result, Cats have killed: 314 mice, 267 birds, 183 skinks, 67 rats, 64 insects, 8 geckos, 3 rabbits and 1 stoat.
  • 43% of the animals that the pet Cats killed were native to New Zealand.
  • Pet Cats killed more birds, skinks, geckos and wetas than rats and mice.

Learning from the Christchurch Earthquake

During 2010, Christchurch had a 7.1 Richter Scale earthquake. The earthquake caused liquefaction. Dr Nicol say “The Christchurch experience teaches us that liquefaction might in some cases cause bigger problems for people than movement on the fault itself.”


The 2010 earthquake Richter scale was 7.1, but nobody died.


The second earthquake was on the 22nd of February 2011, this earthquake’s Richter scale was 6.3. Unlike the earthquake in 2010, this one was worst... 185 people were killed, mostly when multi-storied buildings collapsed.

Scientists are using Christchurch earthquakes as an example to learn from it, so they can warn people to make good choices about where they live.

All About Me


Hi, my name is Shannon. I am a year 7 student at Glenbrae School in Auckland, NZ. I am in Room 8 and my teacher is Mr. Nath.


I like to play Tennis. I like to write long paragraphs and I really like Science, because it’s so creative. I am a Belieber - A real fan of Justin Bieber. I have a 5 month old puppy named Woody. My favourite colour is blue. I can understand a little bit of Hindi.


I like horror movies and comedy too. I think planets and outer space are really interesting and breath-taking.

My goal for 2016 is to be more confident in class and talk more in group activities. I really want to reach the National Standards in all curriculum areas and most of all achieve a higher level in Mathematics.

Fiji Cyclone - Donation.


You might already know this, but Fiji had an awful Cyclone. The Cyclone flooded houses and some people were killed, so my family and I decided that we should give all our clothes and shoes that we don’t wear, to them. We sent them yesterday, there were four really big boxes.

We are also going to donate some stationary for the kids, there are a lot more items I gave to them too. There are two big boxes of stationary, and toys.
We really hope they are safe, and they rebuild quickly.
